Document Transcription Sessions

Join volunteers virtually as we work together to transcribe documents for the Lakeland Digital Archive. The a collection which documents the Lakeland, the historic African American Community of College Park. Current projects are centered around census records, historic University of Maryland ledgers, funeral programs and more. 

Sessions will happen on Saturday, November 4, from 10 AM to Noon. They will also occur on Saturday, November 16, from 10 AM to Noon. Additional sessions are on Monday, November 18, from 5 PM to 7 PM, and Tuesday, December 3, from 5 PM to 7 PM. RSVP from the link below and use the other link to join each session.

  • October 4, 5:30 to 6:30 in person at MITH Classroom*, demo of LDA database basics, Airtable basics
  • October 8, 5:30 to 7:00 in person in MITH as a work session with time to try out various tasks and beginning to add metadata. Item types will include funeral programs, yearbooks, scrap books and newspaper articles.

* MITH is the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities located on the campus of the University of Maryland. They are on the lower level of the Hornbake Library room 0301.

Saturday, October 26 from 8:30 to noon

Join us in preserving and sharing the past of Lakeland, the historic African American community of College Park by enhancing the Lakeland Digital Archive. Volunteers will have their choice of computer based tasks. Activities include: census record transcription, computer-generated oral history transcription correction, meta data entry into an archival database, or historical document transcription.
