September 16, 17 and 18 will be Lakeland Heritage Weekend. 

 This year  addition of a Friday evening Xtreme Teen event in conjuction with National Capital Park and Planning Commission’s College Park Community Center. That evening young people will be treated to an evening of music,dancing and food while the learn about the history of Lakeland and African Americans in Prince Georges County. This event will only be open to young people between the ages of 10 and 18 who regisgter. For registation or more information call the College Park Community Center at 301 441 2647.  

On Saturday morning you can join LCHP’s Vie Sharps Jones at the College Park Community Center from 9:00 to 10:45  for a Geneology Workshop. During that sesion beginners will learn the basics of recording their family trees while more seasoned reseachers will be able to pick up new tips.

Eveyone is invited to Lake Artemesia Park at 11:00 for the unvailing of two new historic placks marking he location of Lakeland’s Eastern section. The markers will introduce anyone visiting the park to the story of thecommunity that once stood there and to  people who called that area home. Following the ceromony LCHP volunteers will be avalible to give walking tours of the area, giving visitors a chance to learn even more about the Lakeland Communtiy.

At noon picnic grounds will be availible at College Park Community Center. Eveyone is welcome to stay all day. You can bring your own food or buy a great meal from Lakeland’s own, Willie Sellers. During the afternoon music from the 1940s to the present will be provided by DJ Sparkles.  All kinds of activities will be available for the whole family including pony rides, face painting, continuous showing of the orignal film, Folks Made the School. The afternoon will end with dancing and the cutting of the Celebration Cake, created especially for the event by Master Baker, Willie Sellers.

On Sunday we will be the guests of the Washington Brazilian Seventh Day Adventist Church at the site of Lakeland School for morning worship at 11:00. For the service Lakeland’s pastors and congregations will join together with all friends and families to give thanks and celebrate the promise of Lakeland’s future.
