Help Find A Home For The Lakeland Mural

The University of Maryland has stated their regrets that the mural location has not yet been found, due to a last minute decision by the property owners, CSX railroad company. UMD’s assurance is that a location for the mural, where the most people can enjoy it, will be found as soon as possible. Every effort is being made to involve the community in a decision about a new site.
Last week representatives of the University of Maryland met with community members and visited the Lakeland Civic Association to get input. Based on those sessions a list of 4 (four) possible locations for the mural were developed. Please take a look at the list and send a note with your preference and thoughts to Ms. Emily Adams, Office of Community Engagement University of Maryland College Park eadams@umd.edu.
The following locations were proposed:

A. The entrance to Lakeland Park, at the corner of Rhode Island Avenue and Lakeland Rd.

B. Lakeland Park tennis courts up against the fence.

C. Along the recreational trail leading from Lakeland to Lake Artemesia, the benches beside by the lake.

D. Outside the College Park Community Center facing Pierce Ave.

Mural Lakeland, Past, Present and Future

On Saturday the mural was unveiled illustrating elements of Lakeland history. This was a project of the University of Maryland with the cooperation of LCHP. It was based upon historic images from the LCHP archives. This mural was designed to be placed in the pedestrian underpass at Lake Artemisia Park. CSX denied final approval of the installation. A permanent installation site for the mural is now being sought.

Black History Program

Thank you to all those who took part in or attended our Black History program in conjunction with Embry AME Church. There was a stimulating conversation by a panel of Lakelanders and guests. Those present received enlightening information on urban renewal from unique viewpoints.

Our young people had a spirited and well challenged test of their Lakeland History knowledge. They learned a great deal about their community. We hope to see you at next year’s program.Click to view slideshow.

The City of College Park has awarded LCHP a Community Services Grant for Heritage Weekend 2013. This event will take place Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15. We are grateful to Mayor Andrew Fellows and the entire City Council for their support.

Tuning into Lakeland for Black History Month

LCHP is partnering with Embry AME Church for the celebration of Black History Month. Join us as we present “Our History Channel” at 2:30 PM on Sunday, February 24, 2013, Embry AME Church, 5101 Lakeland Road, College Park, MD. Two shows, will be witnessed that day, “Inside Lakeland’ were a panel of Lakelanders will discuss the 1970s a transitional period of Black History with milestones including Urban Renewal, and Court ordered Busing. This will be followed by “It’s Blackademic” a quiz show where teams of young people will test their Lakeland History knowledge. Everyone is welcome to come. Heritage Weekend 2012

Heritage Weekend was wonderful. Friday’s Seventy’s Night was a great sharing of that decade’s event’s and music.

On Saturday more than 100 viewed exhibits on Lakeland. Two Lakeland Conversions were recorded and added to the LCHP archives along with several new images. LCHP was honored to receive the donation of medals earned by Lakeland Athlete, Carl “Flash” Cager from the Cager family. That evening athletes of today played two basketball games first the Lakeland All Star 9 and under team played the College Park Community Center 9 and under team. All the boys played with good sportsmanship and put their hearts into their play. Followed was Lakeland All Stars young men’s team playing against a more seasoned group of men. Sunday was a great day of music praise and fellowship.

Thank you to all our hard working volunteers and community partners. Including Maryland – National Capital Park and Planning Commission, City of College Park, Prince Georges County Council, Ottley Music School, Rita’s of College Park, Pizza Autentica, and Noodles and Company.

Mark your calendars for The Third Saturday in August, (August 17, 2013) when LCHP’s Lakeland Heritage celebration goes on the road. We will be celebrating with a beach outing just like in days past. Get your family, friends and picnic baskets ready for the big day. See you at the beach.
