We extend our gratitude to Mayor Fellows, city council members and citizens of College Park for the award of a $1800 Community Services Grant in support of Lakeland Heritage Weekend 2012.

This three day event will begin on Friday, September 14 as LCHP hosts the Tweens at College Park Community Center for “70’s Night”. Saturday’s events will be an Open House for LCHP’s Archives followed that evening with a Basketball game where guest announcers will share tales of Athletes of the past. Sunday’s closing event will be a Community Service and Picnic at Lakeland Park.

Set your calendar and tell your family and friends about this these great happenings in Lakeland. See you there.

During Lakeland Heritage Weekend 2012 we will honor four of Lakeland athletes with their own sports trading card. These cards will be available during the Lakeland Hoops Game on the evening of Saturday, September 15 at the College Park Community Center.
You are invited to nominate a Lakelander to be honored with a card. There will be a maximum of four. Should a LCHP receive a greater number of nominations selections will be made by a committee of three LCHP members. All nominations must be received by August 15, 2012 and consist of a photograph of the athlete preferably in sporting attire or during the period they were most active in their sport of choice along with a paragraph describing their Lakeland connection, as well as their archivists in sport and in life. The narrative should be 80 to 120 words. LCHP retains the right to edit images or wording.  If you have not already done so waste no time in marking your calendar for Lakeland Heritage Weekend 2012. We will start with 1970′s night with the Tweens atCollege ParkCommunity Center. On Saturday there will be an Open House for the LCHP Archives in the Community Center’s Lakeland Room. You are invited to bring your photos and documents for recording and addition to the archives. There will also be recorded forums where you will have a chance to share your stories of the past. That evening the Lakeland All- Stars basketball team will be featured in a game in the Center’s gym. During the game guest announcers will share stories of athletes of Lakeland have used their skills to excel beyond the courts and playing fields. OnSundayEmbryAMEChurchwill be the hosts for a community worship service at LakelandPark.

You will not want to miss a thing.

      Please mark your calendars, and join us at the College Park Community Center for Lakeland Heritage Weekend 2012, September 14-16.  The activities will begin with an Xtreme Teens youth event which will be held on Friday evening, September 14 at 6 PM.  The Lakeland Heritage Archive Open House will take place on Saturday September 15 from 9 AM to 5 PM.  Lakeland community residents and former residents are invited to share their stories and images at this drop-in event.  Volunteers will be on-hand to scan and document your submissions.  Help us identify and date our historic photographs!  Anyone is welcome to make an appointment to add your oral history to the archive by calling (301) 474-7080, or by email to Lakelandhistory@yahoo‌‌.‌‌com.  Other activities on Saturday include a Genealogy Workshop, which will be held from 1 to 2:30 PM, and a Story Keeper’s Workshop, from 3 to 4 PM.  Both workshops will present methods that everyone can learn and use to record and share their heritage.  On Sunday, September 16, at 11 AM, please join us for a Community Worship Service on the lawn of Embry AME Church, 5051 Lakeland Road, College Park, MD 20740.
